Uzbekistan’s Socioeconomic Reforms at the Center of International Discussions
On October 13 of this year, a discussion titled “From Cotton to Capital: Private Sector Solutions for Better Jobs and Better Lives” took place as part of the Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank Group. Institute Director Abbosbek Jurayev delivered a speech on the economic reforms underway in Uzbekistan, particularly the changes in the cotton and textile sector and the results achieved.
Participants included Paschal Donohoe, Managing Director and Chief Knowledge Officer of the World Bank Group; Baroness Theresa May, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom; and Mamta Murthi, Vice President for Human Resources at the World Bank Group. The discussion focused on the role of the private sector in driving economic growth, creating decent jobs, and improving people’s well-being.
Uzbekistan’s experience in the cotton and textile sector was presented as an example of the transition from exporting raw materials to producing and exporting finished goods with high added value. The event provided an important platform for presenting the results of reforms in our country to an international audience, exchanging experiences, and expanding dialogue with development partners.
